I have worked for Arup for 21 years as a structural engineer in the design of buildings.

I am interested in the nature of good design – by which I mean effective design – and the idea that successful designs often take complex problems and reframe them to create simple and buildable solutions. I think that this is one of the key ways engineers can add value to projects.

Beyond day to day work, I have a broad interest in how the world works. An engineer’s obsession perhaps, but this has led me to take an interest in a broad range of subjects from history and economics to science and philosophy.
