I am the founder and leader of Arup International Development which works exclusively with organisations committed to improving human development outcomes. Last year I had the honour of being made an Arup Fellow.

I have been at Arup for over 25 years, and have been a RedR Member since 1991. My career has included designing buildings and infrastructure that improve the quality of life, with working in post-disaster situations helping to relieve suffering and reduce vulnerability. My reflections on the role of engineers in disaster risk reduction were the subject of the 9th Brunel Lecture: Shifting Agendas – from response to resilience.
